What is pat testing?
PAT testing stands for Portable appliance testing and is done to test portable appliances to ensure the equipment is safe for continued use. The easiest way to think of this is a MOT for the electrical equipment.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
No, PAT testing isn't a legal requirement but PAT testing is a vital part of any Health and Safety policy. If an accident did occur due to faulty equipment the duty holder may be deemed responsible. Employers have a duty to ensure that all electrical equipment is maintained and safe for use. The HSE states that upto 25% of all work based accidents involve portable appliances and with this in mind whilst it isn't a legal requirement without testing equipment you could be endangering your work force or opening yourself/company up to liability.

What happens if an item fails
Overtime electrical equipment can fail due to general wear and tear, Damage or the environment within which it is used. If an item fails then we will advise you of the reason and in most cases we will be able to advise how to repair the item and carry out a repair where necessary. We never repair equipment without first advising you of any additional costs.

What does a PAT test involve?
PAT testing comprises of two parts. First a visual inspection of the equipment and secondly a series of tests on the equipment to ensure it is safe for use.

Do I get a report following testing?
Yes, following testing all equipment will be entered into a report which shows if the item passed or failed the process. the report will also state the next advised test date for the equipment. each item will also be marked with a pass or fail sticker to show that the item has been tested. Following completion of the testing the report will be emailed to you for you to keep on file.

How long does it take to test equipment?
The testing process depends on the number of items to be tested, the location of items and the items themselves. we will always advise you of an estimated time for the work to be undertaken and we will work with you to ensure that minimal disruption occurs to your company.
